The use of cannabis to treat epilepsy and other neurological conditions has been studied for years. The first major step by the government to acknowledge the correlation between cannabis and seizures happened on June 25th of 2018. The Drug Enforcement Administration (FDA) approved a drug called Epidiolex to treat seizures associated with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS) in patients ages 2 years and older.
Epidiolex contains CBD and comes as a liquid solution thats taken by mouth. Studies soon showed that seizure patients who were taking Epidiolex had 20% to 25% fewer seizures than people not taking it. People with Dravet syndrome who were taking Epidiolex had 26% fewer seizures than people not taking it. As Epidiolex is the first FDA approved drug made from cannabis, it leaves us wondering weather other cannabis products could have the same effect.
Both THC and CBD are considered to be in a group of substances called cannabinoids. They bind to receptors in the brain which blocks the transmissions of pain signals. It also works on other signaling systems and has protective and anti- inflammatory properties. The reason for these cannabinoids effecting epilepsy isn’t fully understood, however studies show that both CBD and THC can be extremely influential in the treatment of seizure disorders. That being said, results vary based on product and method of consumption, so finding the right product is essential.
The benefit of Epidiolex is its purity. Because some patients can’t afford or aren’t eligible for Epidiolex, its important when looking for a different product to inquire about the purity and the dosage. Also make sure to consult with a doctor or medical cannabis expert to ensure you’re getting the best product for you.
