We see CBD everywhere nowadays from massage parlors to public markets to even pet stores! A recent Consumer Reports nationally representative survey of 1,003 adults showed that 13% of American adults have used CBD to treat a health issue, and 90% of those said it helped. But in an unregulated market how do we know the products we buy are safe? It’s important to research the difference between CBD products and figure out how to get your hands on the best, safest, and cleanest product for you.
One way to make a more informed decision is to look for products from states that have legalized both the medical and recreational use of cannabis. These states tend to have stricter standards and local competition which drives up quality and drives down price. Another important factor when choosing a CBD product is whether or not the company provides third party lab testing. When your product comes with a document (or a QR code), you’re getting a full review of all of the cannabinoids, terpenes, materials, and dosages within the product. In my opinion, if a company doesn’t offer third party lab testing, they’re trying to hide something about their product that they might not want consumers to know.
When it comes to safe CBD dosing, the most important thing is to start small. Usually a CBD product will have a recommended dose. Say a CBD tincture says “start with 1-3 drops under the tongue daily”. Start with one. If that didn’t seem to effect you at all, the next day take two , etc. Keep working your way up until you feel that you’ve found your optimal dose. You have to be patient and willing to experiment with CBD if you want to get the most out of it. It’s not a “one try” solution.
The last and most important tip for safe CBD use is keeping your doctor in the loop. Patients are often reluctant to tell their doctors about alternative remedies in fear of being chastised, however telling your doctor is in your best interest. Your doctor will be able to let you know of any potential drug interactions and risks associated with your condition. They may also be able to suggest a specific product or dosage that will set you on the right path.
